For years, Asiana and Korean Air have
practiced hiring foreign pilots, which goes against the standards set by the
Labor Union.This practice has been attractive for airline companies because it
brings down costs for the company. As such, the Labor Union sued both
airlines for illegally hiring foreign workers through a foreign outsourcing
company. Though Asiana and Korean Air insists that there is shortage of pilots
in Korea, the reality is that Korean pilots are being replaced by the foreign
workers. As a result, Korean pilots have lost their abilities to negotiate
salaries, protect worker’s right, and their marketability in the airline
industry.
Asiana Airlines denied labor union members access to
gaining documents and information regarding the business practice of the
company.
Moreover, Asiana Airlines did not allow labor union members to
receive paid vacations, which violated the Workplace Rights.
Lastly,
there are rumors about labor union members being disadvantaged when it comes to
employee evaluation.
